Sheep Scanning Season

Returning after a brief hiatus in 2020, we were delighted to be able to run our sheep scanning courses again this year. Over the space of two weeks, 23 people received their introduction to sheep scanning over an intensive 2-day beginners course. Another 8 attended the refresher / triplet scanning courses.

Education has always been at the centre of everything that we do. The sheep scanning course with Progressive Animal Services Ltd is offered when a customer purchases their first Ovi-Scan 6 and our Livestock account manager, Scot Cowan, strongly encourages uptake for the course.

SHEEP SCANNING 6

Duncan and David Kennedy of Progressive Animal Services Ltd, alongside another local expert Bruce Gallacher, welcomed trainees to Thornhill in Dumfries and Galloway as they have been doing for over 25 years. The training team were keen to share the experiences they have gained during their long and successful careers in the livestock scanning industry with the next generation of scanners. This involved helping them develop a system and strategy to accurately scan ewes.  Also important is to explain and demonstrate some techniques to not only accurately scan sheep but look after their bodies in a very repetitive job.

SHEEP SCANNING 9

Accurately diagnosing how many lambs a ewe is carrying takes practice. Confidence and speed will come with time, some of our more experienced customers advise it can take three seasons before you feel more relaxed with the service you provide to sheep farmers.

We want to ensure that our customers get the most out of their investment in the Ovi-Scan 6 and attending this course is a fundamental part in that.

First manufactured in 1985, our mechanical sector probe is the trusted companion of thousands of sheep scanners in every corner of the world. The sheep industry were pioneers, (through Dr Angus Russel’s collaboration with BCF Technology (IMV Imaging)), in the use of ultrasound to manage production systems.

Accurate determination of foetal numbers led to improvements in animal welfare, feeding strategies and efficiency in the whole sector. Sheep scanning contractors were IMV Imaging’s very first customers.

From those pioneering days in the 80’s introducing ultrasound to farm animal production we are proud to still be providing this probe alongside the Ovi-Scan 6 today.
